On Sunday you asked about our feeling regarding the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Whenever I hear of mass tragedies such as this (or school bus crashes), I am always struck by the fact that if the senseless violence involves only 1 person (victim) then it is generally ignored by us. I would suspect that more than 30 people are killed in this country on a weekly basis in what must be senseless violence, but it is only when large numbers are affected do we take notice. The tragedy of a single life taken does not seem to be less than the tragedy of many lives. As to the victim and his/her family, the loss is still as great. It seems like we should be more concerned with the single acts, knowing that there are 30 or more perpetrators rather than just one. We seem to pour out money to aid the families of mass tragedies, but do little for families affected by individual tragedies. It's almost like a score keeping process. The next mass shooting must involve more than 30 people, otherwise it won't be the biggest, and therefore, will get less media attention.
Several years ago, I asked my mother why she lets my kids do things that she never would have let me do. She told me that they needed a place to go where they knew there was unconditional love, that they did not have to be concerned about whether they picked up their rooms, ate their vegetables, or took a bath, but that they would be loved no matter what. That to me is a rare grace that we don't see enough of, whether it is with our children, spouses or friends. How nice it would be to have a place to go where you know that you will be unconditionally accepted no matter your most recent failures or disappointment in your life. Rarely, do we let people know that we love and care for them no matter what.
Thanks to John Kenny - the live music is a really a nice touch!
